Just when you thought things couldn't get any more odd for the Virginia Tech men's basketball team this week, think again.

Earlier this week, several key contributors from the 2023-24 team announced they were entering the transfer portal. Point guard Sean Pedulla, MJ Collins, Mylyjael Poteat, Lynn Kidd, and Tyler Nickel all entered the transfer portal within 48 hours. Three days later, one has decided to return to Blacksburg for the 2024-25 season.

Mylyjael Poteat announces he's returning to Virginia Tech for 2024-25 season

Saturday afternoon, Poteat announced on his Instragram page that he's returning to Virginia Tech for his final season of eligibility.

This season primarily as a backup to Kidd, Poteat averaged 6.4 points and 3.5 rebounds a game and as the season went along, he became more and more of an inside presence for head coach Mike Young. The 6-foot-9 Reidsville, North Carolina native spent the first two seasons of his college career at Rice before coming to the Hokies.

In two seasons in Blacksburg, Poteat has played in 68 games and this season he shot 64.4% from the field and reached double figures in points six times. He had 18 points and six rebounds against Georgia Tech on Jan. 27 and then had 15 points and eight boards against North Carolina on Feb. 17.

This is good news for Young and his staff in terms of building a roster for next season. Kidd is not coming back as he committed to Miami on Thursday and Pedulla posted on X that he's open to returning to Virginia Tech after he tests the portal waters. We'll see.

There is still a long way to go for Virginia Tech in terms of building a roster for next season, but Poteat coming back is certainly a good start and now it's going to be interesting to see where they go from here.
