Following each season in college sports, the transfer portal is getting bigger and bigger. We see it in football and basketball big time. This spring, Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young had a spring season he won't forget for a while.

Shortly after his Hokies were eliminated from the NIT in the second round by Ohio State, things started to move and move fast. Three players, Hunter Cattoor, Robbie Beran, and Mekhi Long were out of eligibility, but some players have some eligibility left and decided to play it out elsewhere.

Leaving in the transfer portal were point guard Sean Pedulla (Ole Miss), Tyler Nickel and MJ Collins (Vanderbilt), and Lynn Kidd (Miami). Mylyjael Poteat entered the portal, but just a couple of days later, he withdrew and announced that he was returning to Virginia Tech for his final season.

With all of those key players walking out the door from Blacksburg, that meant Young and his staff had to scramble to fill out their roster for the upcoming season and they did that, but according to Tristan Freeman of Busting Brackets, the Hokies lost a lot of rotation players and did not field a roster that he feels is going to replace what they lost.

Virginia Tech receives a very low grade for 2024 offseason

Freeman graded the offseason for each ACC school in men's basketball and Virginia Tech received a D-, which should not come as a surprise. To compound matters this offseason as Freeman mentioned was the Jordan Ivy-Curry situation where he committed to Young, only to de-commit, reopen his recruiting, and land at Central Florida. He would have been a key piece to the Hokies in 2024-25.

It's going to be hard for Young to replace what he lost in terms of production for this upcoming season, but if the Hokies are going to be a sleeper in the ACC and have visions of a postseason berth, they are going to need some of their new players to step up and produce on close to a nightly basis and they will also need the incoming freshmen to do the same.
