Spring football practices are upon us and that includes Virginia Tech. One area that the Hokies are all set with entering the practices is at quarterback. Baylor transfer Kyron Drones is returning for another season in Blacksburg and fans are hoping he picks up 2024 where he left off in 2023.

Last season when he took over in Week 3 for the injured Grant Wells, it took him a couple of games to feel comfortable, but once he did, Virginia Tech's offense took off and they are getting a lot of the key contributors returning as well. That has sparked some excitement heading into spring practices and 2024 and Drones have been getting recognition ahead of the season and one national college football writer, Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports thinks Drones' name will be known quickly.

"If you don't know Drones, don't worry, you will. Drones exploded in the second half of the 2023 season and the Hokies followed. Over Virginia Tech's final seven games, Drones threw for 2,085 yards, rushed for 818 and had 22 total touchdowns. He's is the biggest reason many consider the Hokies an ACC dark horse in 2024."

Drones threw for almost 3,000 yards in 2023 with 17 touchdowns and three interceptions, while rushing for over 800 yards and five more touchdowns. He became a dual-threat QB last season and along with running back Bhayshul Tuten, they formed a tough running duo for opposing defenses.

One of the reasons that Fornelli likely thinks Drones will become a name that people get to know is because of the offensive players that are coming back. Along with Tuten, wide receivers Ali Jennings, Stephen Gosnell, Da'Quan Felton, and Jaylin Lane are coming back, and most of the Hokies' offensive line. Tight end Nick Gallo is also returning after missing last season with an injury, but he was granted a medical redshirt season by the NCAA.

Drones was the only ACC quarterback on the list and he has an opportunity to be one of the top quarterbacks in the conference next season. If that happens, the Hokies could be in for a memorable season.
