In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, one of Mike Young's transfers will head overseas to train with his national team, and a former Virginia Tech baseball player will play in an MLB futures game on All-Star Weekend.
Men's Baksetball transfer Tobi Lawal to train with National team for a week
Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young underwent a roster overhaul in the spring after several players with eligibility to return hit the transfer portal and left, which meant the veteran coach had work to do himself in the portal to make additions for the 2024-25 season. One of the players who committed will spend next week training with a national team.
Tobi Lawal, who transferred from VCU will train with the Great Britain national team ahead of the Subway Summer Slam. Lawal, who averaged 7.7 points and six rebounds a game last season for the Rams will play a big role for Virginia Tech as a junior in the upcoming season. This will be a good experience for Lawal.
Gavin Cross selected to play in the 2024 All-Star Futures Game
Former Virginia Tech baseball outfielder Gavin Cross, who was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft in the first round, was selected to play in the 2024 All-Star Futures Game. This will be the 25th annual showcase that will feature 39 members of MLB Pipeline's recently updated Top 100 Prospects list in a seven-inning game on July 13, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas ahead of the MLB All-Star game in a week and a half.
This season in Double-A for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals he is hitting .279 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs at the time that this article is being written. He finished his three seasons in Blacksburg with a .340 average and helped the Hokies reach the Super Regionals in 2022.
