Virginia Tech Hokies News: Final Four distinction, Top 25 baseball ranking
By Scott Roche
In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, Virginia Tech can claim victory, literally, over two Final Four teams, the baseball team stands pat in one Top 25 poll, and more.
Virginia Tech men & women go undefeated against a pair of Final Four teams
One team is on a Cinderella run while the other is on a not-so-surprising one. However, with both the North Carolina State men and women making the Final Four this upcoming weekend, Virginia Tech sits back and watches knowing that they beat both teams and in the women’s case, beat them twice, something not many other ACC programs can claim.
The NC State women knocked off top-seed Texas to win the Portland 4 Regional Sunday and the Hokies’ women’s team beat the Wolfpack not once, but twice this season—their first victory on Jan. 7 was one for the memory books when they rallied from a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit to win on an Elizabeth Kitley basket with 0.9 seconds left, 63-62, off a cross-court inbounds pass from Cayla King. The second matchup was won handily by the Hokies on the road, 72-61, on Feb. 8. NC State has six losses so far this season, two to Virginia Tech.
On the men’s side, the Hokies' win over the Wolfpack, 84-78, on Jan. 20 in Raleigh was Virginia Tech’s only conference road victory until they took down Louisville a month and a half later. Considering how things went on the road this season, go figure Tech’s best road win came against a team in the Final Four. Don’t get me wrong, nobody saw this NC State amazing run coming, but it shows just how close Virginia Tech was to an NCAA Tournament berth if a few things had broken their way.
Baseball travels to Marshall; up to No. 11 in the country
The Virginia Tech baseball, fresh off of taking two out of three over the weekend against Pittsburgh at English Field, hits the road for a rematch with Marshall, one week after they took down the Thundering Hurd, 4-2. The Hokies, which is up to No. 11 in the latest D1Baseball poll, will then host Wake Forest this upcoming weekend in a key ACC three-game series.
Softball doubleheader canceled
The Hokies softball team was supposed to host Wofford for a doubleheader on Tuesday, but on Monday they announced, it had been canceled. Virginia Tech is still scheduled to host Liberty on Wednesday.
