Going into the 2024 season, the new 12-team College Football Playoff field opens up the hope for more fanbases to dream about their team getting into the larger field. Of course, to begin the season, the normal teams are named when it comes to predicting the field, but there are a lot of teams who could be dark horses.

Virginia Tech is one of those teams that many national college football writers have named as a potential dark horse. A ton of retainment with some key transfers have the Hokies on a lot of people's radar, but can they live up to the hype is one of the biggest questions entering 2024.

National CFB writer labels Virginia Tech has a program with "Newfound hope" entering 2024

David Ubben of The Athletic listed a number of programs as teams with "Newfound hope" when it comes to potentially crashing the 12-team CFP field this season, including the Hokies.

"The Hokies played for a national title in 1999, losing to … Florida State, which they now share a conference with. A Big East-ACC national title game feels like an alternate universe, in part because Big East football no longer exists. But the Hokies making the Playoff under Brent Pry is a real possibility in a wide-open ACC, thanks to an offense that got red hot late last season and returns all 11 starters, paired with an experienced defense. Virginia Tech never reached a New Year’s Six Bowl and hasn’t played in a major bowl game since Frank Beamer won the Sugar Bowl in 2011, capping a run of four BCS bowls in five seasons.

Percent to make Playoff: 23 percent"

David Ubben

Ubben giving Virginia Tech a 23% chance to make the College Football Playoff is higher than most would have thought they would have. For the Hokies to get into the playoff, they would need to go at least 11-1 and at least make the ACC Championship Game and maybe even win it.

It feels like the Hokies are getting closer and closer to a major bowl as it's only a matter of time and that time could be this season.
