Virginia Tech football transfer portal ranking is no cause for concern for 2024

There is no need to be worried about the Hokies transfer portal rankings after not needing to address many needs this season.

If there is one school that has had luck with the transfer portal recently, it’s Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry. A big reason why some people expect big things this fall is because of the additions that he made from the portal two years ago and a lot of those players are returning for the 2024 campaign in Blacksburg.

This season, the transfer portal was again kind to Pry, despite losing 18 players. Four players, Dae’Quan Wright (Ole Miss.), Derrick Canteen (Cincinnati), Da’Wain Lofton (Oklahoma State), and Dylan Wittke (Minnesota) were players who were lost to major programs. Add additions the Hokies got from Aeneas Peebles (Duke), Kelvin Gilliam (Oklahoma), Sam Brumfield (Middle Tennessee State), Kemari Copeland (Iowa Western Community College), and Montavious Cunningham (Georgia State), there is going to be a lot of depth for head coach Brent Pry and his staff.

Virginia Tech's low ACC transfer portal ranking is nothing to be ashamed of

247Sports broke down the winners and losers from the transfer portal this season and Virginia Tech came in at No. 12, which you would think is low, but it’s not.

"Sometimes the portal is about maintaining more than upgrading the roster. Virginia Tech lost 18 players to the portal but only three landed at power programs, so the Hokies countered with seven additions, including five from power programs. The additions of defensive lineman Aeneas Peebles (Duke) and Khurtiss Perry (Alabama) may have solidified the only question marks on the roster this spring. Peebles is an all-ACC talent and Perry is seemingly on the cusp of tapping into his potential in the middle of the defensive line. Tech returns most of its production this season, and adding experience like that in the middle of the defensive line was a gigantic development that mostly went unnoticed outside the program."

There is no reason to be worried about the Hokies finishing in the bottom half of the rankings as there were few needs they had. They added a ton of depth on defense in the spring with Khurtiss Perry from Alabama and Kaleb Spencer from Miami, while adding a backup quarterback in Collin Schlee from UCLA.  If there were more departures to the NFL Draft or transfer portal, then there would be a cause for concern, but because of the retainment and returning production, their ranking here is no reason to panic. Brent Pry is building it and the players are staying.
