Virginia Tech football opponent using very unique offensive strategy entering 2024

Two weeks from today, the Virginia Tech football team will kick off their season in Nashville against SEC foe Vanderbilt. Head coach Clark Lea is looking to rebuild the Commodores in the vaunted SEC with a ton of powerhouse programs and it doesn't get easier with Texas and Oklahoma joining the conference this season.
This offseason, Lea hired a new offensive coordinator, Tim Beck, and they also got former New Mexico State quarterback Diego Pavia in the transfer portal. Looking to try and get his offense jump started, Lea and Beck are looking to try something different this season with their offense.
Vanderbilt will attempt to flip their guards and tackles from down to down depending on which hash mark the ball is placed on. It's certainly worth a shot I guess as Vandy really has nothing to lose. Their first chance to try it out will be against the Hokies on Aug. 31. In 2016, Lamar Jackson and Louisville did it in a season where he took home the Heisman Trophy.
"If you think about it, there are certain runs where a quick guard may be asked to do one technique, a strong guard another," Lea said. "Or a strong guard is anchored with the tight end more, and so the combinations are a little different. When you're dealing with young players and developmental players, it's about trying to optimize repetition."
Don't expect a Vanderbilt quarterback to take home the Heisman Trophy this season, but hey, anything is possible as the Commodores did get a vote to win the SEC this year. Just how much that voter believes it's possible is another thing, but Vanderbilt feels like they're the Virginia of the SEC, pulling out all the stops they can to try and save their head coach's job at the end of the season.
