At the rate the month of December is going, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry doesn't want to see the calendar change to January. This month has been a huge win both on and off the field for the second-year Hokies head coach.

Virginia Tech added four key transfers in the portal over the last two weeks, offensive lineman Montavious Cunningham, linebacker Sam Brumfield, and defensive linemen Kemari Copeland and Aeneas Peebles. Then the Hokies went out and beat Tulane, 41-20, in the Military Bowl.

Less than 24 hours after the dust settled from the win over the Green Wave, the Hokies got another commitment from the transfer portal and they added more defensive line depth.

Kelvin Gilliam, Jr. commits to Virginia Tech

Thursday morning, Oklahoma defensive lineman Kelvin Gilliam was the latest transfer to commit to Virginia Tech for 2024 and he has two more years of eligibility remaining.

The Highland Springs native from Richmond returns to the state and will play in Blacksburg. A big and tough lineman at 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, he played in just 16 games over three seasons for the Sooners with 10 tackles. Pry needed defensive linemen for next season as Pheldarius Payne, Mario Kendricks, and Norell Pollard all played their final game as Hokies against Tulane.

Virginia Tech's defensive line was very tough to contain this season and now they added Copeland, Peebles and Gilliam along with Josh Fuga and Antwaun Powell-Ryland who have committed to coming back next fall.

Brumfield fills a need at linebacker and Mansoo Delane and Dorian Strong return to a secondary that got better and better as the season went along. It's safe to say that Virginia Tech fans can't wait for the 2024 season to get here quickly enough after the way they ended the season.
