In this edition of Virginia Tech Football News, head coach Brent Pry names his QB2, seven captains are named and a young safety is seizing a big opportunity in camp as the regular season inches closer in nine days.

Collin Schlee named QB2

One camp battle that was closely watched was between UCLA transfer Collin Schlee and Pop Watson as to who would be the backup for Kyron Drones. In the end and really to no one's surprise, Pry announced that Schlee was QB2 going into the season which opens next weekend at Vanderbilt.

Schlee has a lot of experience between his time at Kent State and UCLA and while there will be some plays likely in the offensive playbook for him, truth be told, unless something happens to Drones, just how much will he play? Incoming freshman Davi Belfort has shown some glimpses of what he could be down the line, but right now he's just learning on the go behind Drones, Schlee, and Watson.

Brent Pry names 7 captains for 2024

Wednesday was a busy day for Pry as not only did he announce that Schlee would enter the season as QB2, but he also named seven captains for the season and it was released on the Virginia Tech Football X account.

Cole Nelson, Sam Brumfield, Drones, Dorian Strong, Da'Quan Felton, Kaden Moore, and Peter Moore were named captains.

Mose Phillips impressing as camp winds down

Another question entering camp was how were the Hokies going to fill the safety spot opposite Jalen Stroman. There were several options, but Mose Phillips has appeared to impressed the most and likely get the nod at Vanderbilt in the opener.

"I don’t think anybody’s playing the boundary (safety) better than Mose right now."

If the Hokies can keep Dorian Strong and Mansoor Delane in their current positions, that will be big for the secondary this season.
