We are stuck in the middle of college sports teams building their roster not only through recruiting but also through the transfer portal. It's easy to reload for the next season when you're able to go and grab veterans who can come in and make an immediate impact.

Last season we saw how vital the transfer portal was for Virginia Tech as a lot of the success they had was because of the additions through the portal with quarterback Kyron Drones, running back Bhayshul Tuten, wide receivers Jaylin Lane, Da'Quan Felton and defensive edge Antwaun Powell-Ryland just a few who stepped up in played a big role in them finishing 7-6 and a bowl win in late December.

This past offseason, once again head coach Brent Pry and his staff were active in the transfer portal, and in the end, one website has them finishing in the top 5 in the ACC in the transfer portal star ranking.

Virginia Tech ranks in Top 5 in ACC transfer portal star rankings

According to Rivals, Virginia Tech welcomed in seven transfers and all have a three-star rating which is why they ended up with a 3-star rating. The only schools ahead of them were Miami, Florida State, Louisville, and North Carolina State with the Hurricanes being the only one on the Hokies schedule this season.

The key additions were along the offensive line with Aeneas Peebles from Duke, Kelvin Gilliam from Oklahoma, Kemari Copeland from Iowa Western Community College, and Khurtiss Perry from Alabama, while linebacker Sam Brumfield from Middle Tennessee State and offensive lineman Montavious Cunningham from Georgia State.

This transfer portal group addressed needs on defense and hopefully helps defend the run better at both the first and second levels. For a second straight year, Pry and his staff went into the portal with a plan and executed it very well in terms of needs and additions for the 2024 season.
