Virginia Tech football gets a commitment from Kemari Copeland in the transfer portal
By Scott Roche
Whatever approach Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry is using this year, it appears to be working. After starting the season 1-3, the Hokies went 5-3 in the ACC and became bowl eligible. While that is all well and good, the news off the field for 2024 continues to get better and better by the day.
Less than an hour after the Hokies landed one of the top defensive tackles in the transfer portal, they got a commitment from the top JUCO defensive tackle in the transfer portal for 2024.
Kemrai Copeland commits to Virginia Tech
Iowa Western Community College’s Kemari Copeland announced on X Monday afternoon that he is committed to Virginia Tech, joining Duke transfer Aeneas Peebles who announced on X earlier that he was coming to Blacksburg.
Copeland had 38 tackles this season and 4.5 sacks and the Virginia Beach native is coming home to play for the Hokies. He had other offers from Arkansas, North Carolina State, and Tennessee. He recently had his official visit to Virginia Tech and it’s clear they won him over.
All of a sudden within an hour, the Hokies defensive line for next season got a whole lot better. Two weeks ago Antwaun Powell-Ryland and Josh Fuga announced that they were returning, now defensive coordinator and head coach Brent Pry land two of the top defensive tackles in the transfer portal in Copeland and Pebles.
Virginia Tech’s defense got better over the final two months of the season and dominated in their five conference wins, but getting Powell-Ryland and Fuga to come back and land Copeland and Peebles in the transfer portal along with Mansoor Delane and Dorian Strong coming back in the secondary, this has a chance to be a special unit next season.
