Virginia Tech fans should be thrilled with potential roster retainment news from Megan Duffy
By Scott Roche
Friday, Megan Duffy was officially introduced as the next head women’s basketball coach at Virginia Tech. Current and former Hokies were in attendance including Elizabeth Kitley, Cayla King, Matilda Ekh, Carleigh Wenzel, Mackenzie Nelson, Samyha Suffren, and Rose Micheaux were inside Cassell Coliseum. Duffy later said that Carys Baker was attending a class.
There was a lot of very good news to come out of the introduction and if there is one thing that Hokies fans can be right now, it’s relieved at some of the news that includes current players on the roster and even recruits.
Thursday, the Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball X account dropped a post that had Hokies’ fans hopeful that three players, Wenzel, Micheaux, and Ekh, met with Duffy and it was a sign that they were committed to the program next season and beyond. Friday, Duffy gave some clarification on some of the players on what their plans intend to be for the 2024-25 season.
Duffy said that it appears that Samyha Suffren withdrew her name from the transfer portal and will be back next season and that recruit Myah Hazelton, who was recruited by Kenny Brooks, confirmed her commitment to Virginia Tech.
Duffy said that it appears that recruits Lexi Blue and Clara Silva will look elsewhere for their college career. That is not surprising.
Of course, the transfer portal is ever-changing, almost hour-by-hour and players can hop in it before it closes at the end of the month, but if Duffy can retain other players besides Wenzel, it’s going to be a nice start to her tenure in Blacksburg. She will likely dip into the transfer portal to make additions to her roster, but by all indications, so far so good with retaining key pieces off the current roster not named Georgia Amoore or Clara Strack.
