Virginia Tech coach Mike Young completes rebuild for 2024-25 with veteran transfer
By Scott Roche
Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young has seen a lot of things during his tenure on the college basketball sidelines from assistant coach to head coach, but he wasn't expecting what happened after an NIT loss to Ohio State back in March. The former Wofford coach went through a mass exodus of players following the 2023-24 season in Blacksburg. Yes, you could tell during the season that some of the players might be leaving in the transfer portal for other schools, while some of the players that left were surprising.
Young and his staff were left with the tough task this spring of rebuilding the Hokies roster and it was nearly complete a couple of months ago, but there was one roster spot still open. With 14 players already going through summer workouts, Virginia Tech added a 15th and final player to the roster for the 2024-25 season with an Eastern Michigan transfer.
Connor Serven added to Virginia Tech men's basketball roster
Connor Serven, who began his college career at Illinois before transferring to Eastern Michigan is the final missing piece to the Hokies roster for the upcoming season. According to Virginia Tech, he has two years of eligibility remaining after his two previous stops.
"We are excited about adding Connor to our program as he brings experience, wisdom and a versatile game. He is a hard-playing dude who has a high level of skill and smarts – our type of guy. We are eager to get Connor here and continue to develop him."
- Mike Young
Last season for Eastern Michigan, Serven averaged 3.3 points and 3.1 rebounds a game. The 6-foot-8 forward is added to a frontcourt that includes transfer Ben Burnham of College of Charleston, Tobi Lawal of VCU, incoming freshman Ryan Jones, and returning senior Mylyjael Poteat. The Hokies will open the season on Nov. 4 at Cassell Coliseum against Delaware State.
