By Scott Roche
The first two rounds of the 2024 MLB Draft Sunday night were quiet in terms of Virginia Tech players having their names called. That all changed on Day 2 on Monday when head coach John Szefc had three of his players have their names called.
Carson DeMartini, Wyatt Parliament, and Eddie Micheletti had their names called during rounds 3-10 with DeMartini going to the Philadelphia Phillies with the 130th pick overall, and in the fourth round, Parliament went to the New York Yankees at No. 211 in the seventh round and Micheletti went No. 247 in the eighth round to the Toronto Blue Jays.
DeMartini, ranked No. 93 on MLB's Top 250 Draft Prospects list, batted .313 in 2024 for the Hokies in 54 games with 21 home runs12 doubles, and three triples while driving in 57 runs. He finished with an OPS of 1.072 and slugged .672.
Parliament made 15 appearances in 2024 for Virginia Tech and had a 1.30 WHIP in 10 starts going 4-3 in 43.2 innings. He walked 13 batters and struck out 78.
Michaeletti batted .311 with with a 1.063 OPS in 54 games. He had 11 doubles and 12 home runs for the Hokies and slugged .599 while driving in 50 runs.
The final day of the Draft is Tuesday with rounds 11-20 and there are still some other Virginia Tech players who might have their names called. Pitchers Brady Kirtner and Jordan Little are still available, while Christian Martin and Ben Watson who have yet to be called. This is the third straight Draft that Virginia Tech has had at least three players selected and it would be surprising not to namessee Martin or Watson not get drafted on the final in Texas ahead of the annual All-Star Game Tuesday night at the home of the Texas Rangers.
