This season, Stanford, California, and SMU joined the ACC making it a coast-to-coast conference. Travel was going to be a big challenge for all schools going from coast to coast. In the big picture, it's the new college sports landscaped and realignment is likely not done.

Saturday, the Virginia Tech football team made their first cross-country flight to California to play Stanford. It was a trip that a lot of Hokies fans were looking forward to and a trip that a lot of Hokies fans made. Virginia Tech fans travel and travel well.

The problem on Saturday was that the case could be made that Virginia Tech had as many fans in attendance as the host Cardinal did. That's the truth. If you paid attention to social media and the TV, there were plenty of good seats still available during Virginia Tech's 31-7 victory.

Stanford's low attendance was embarrassing vs. Virginia Tech

If you couldn't tell from some of the shots on the TV, it was a rather light crowd at Stanford. Here are a couple of pictures from X.

So Stanford announced 36,277 for the attendance against the Hokies. That's a stretch, to put it mildly. It looked worse on social media than it did on TV during the ACC Network's broadcast because they primarily kept their cameras on the field and sidelines.

The weather was hot with a heat index of over 100 degrees, but still, this was not a good look for Stanford in their very first home football ACC game. It was embarrassing actually despite the weather. A once proud program has hit rock bottom lately and it appears to be affecting the attendance in the fall. Hopefully, that won't be the case in the winter when the basketball season starts, but for now, the Cardinal fans are not catching on to the new-look ACC yet. Clearly.
