After losing in stunning fashion at Miami last Friday night, we were going to learn a lot about the Virginia Tech football team in 2024. Not only did they have to recover from that loss, but they had to travel nearly 2,300 miles West to play first-year ACC member Stanford. How were they going to react?

ACC. 7. 517. Final. 31. 447

How did they react? They reacted the way Virginia Tech fans hoped they would. They flushed the Miami game out of their system and put together an impressive performance in a victory over the Cardinal to get back to .500 at 3-3. You could say it was a statement victory. Here is some instant reaction to the Hokies' win.

Instant reaction from Virginia Tech beating Stanford

  • Going into the game, it was going to power vs. power with Virginia Tech running back Bhayshul Tuten going up against a stout Stanford defensive line, which was ranked No. 8 in the country and No. 1 in the ACC against the run. That didn't seem to bother the Hokies as they rushed for a season-high 96 first-half yards against the Cardinal defense. They did it on only four drives.
  • The Hokies' defense in the first half bent, but never broke. They forced a missed field goal on the game's opening drive, then forced a turnover at the 3-yard line with a forced fumble. They also held Stanford's standout wide receiver Elic Ayomanor to no first-half catches.
  • Da'Quan Felton had a nice touchdown reception on the first drive of the second half when he snagged a Kyron Drones pass thrown behind him, but he was able to grab it and race 55 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half for a 21-0 lead.
  • Stanford did a nice job holding the Hokies to a field goal attempt after a Kenota Jenkins interception in the fourth quarter, but a running into the kicker on the attempt gave Virginia Tech a first down and Drones sealed the game with a touchdown on a keeper for a 28-7 lead with 7:28 left.
  • It was a good game for offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen who was aggressive from the first drive and made some good calls. If only we had that all season long.
  • In a strange, but maybe somewhat useless take, but Stanford wasn't exactly in a hurry-up mode in the second half offensively down by three scores. That benefitted the Hokies defense in the California heat.

The Hokies will now have their first bye week next weekend, then will host Boston College on a Thursday night, Oct. 17. The Eagles were beaten, 24-12 at Virginia Saturday.
