Miami transfer would fill a huge hole for Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young
By Scott Roche
The 2024 offseason for Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young has been one of change. Gone through graduation are Robbie Beran and Hunter Cattoor, while Sean Pedulla, MJ Collins, Tyler Nickel, and Lynn Kidd have entered the transfer portal to elsewhere next season.
Young has got some commitments from the transfer portal, but truth be told, he could use about three more. Committed to Virginia Tech for the 2024-25 season are Ben Burnham from the College of Charleston, Jordan Ivy-Curry from UTSA, Hysier Miller from Temple, and Rodney Brown from California.
Ideally, adding another big would be perfect for Young to play with Mylyjael Poteat, who entered the trasnfer portal in march but withdrew to comeback to Blacksburg for his final season. Their answer might be with a new transfer portal entry on Thursday.
Virginia Tech should make a run at former Miami big man
Needing another big, Norchad Omier from Miami entered the transfer portal Thursday, and what an addition he would be to the Hokies roster next season. This past for Miami, he dealt with injuries, but the 6-foot-7, 240-pound Omier averaged 17 points a game and 10 rebounds a night. He was a double-double machine for the Hurricanes.
Against Virginia Tech on Jan. 13 in a 75-71 Miami win on the road, Omier had 14 points and five rebounds, then three weeks later when the two teams met in South Florida, he had 16 points and seven rebounds in an 82-74 Miami come-from-behind victory. Ironically, that was the last win Miami had in the season as they closed the season losing their final 11 regualr season games and their first ACC Tournament game to Boston College.
Kidd committed to Miami three days after entering the transfer portal and getting Omier to Virginia Tech would be a massive pick up for Young and his staff and really set the Hokies up for a good 2024-25 campaign.
