Monday, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry secured his second four-star Class of 2025 commit when Portsmouth native Matthew Outten committed as a wide receiver. He joins fellow in-state linebacker commitment Brett Clatterbaugh as a four-star commit to the Hokies.

Outten is a huge pickup for Virginia Tech in terms of who they beat out for him. They kept him home in the Commonwealth over Syracuse, Maryland, and more importantly Penn State. James Franklin and his staff have not had a problem entering the state and getting some of the top recruits that Virginia has to offer, but not this time.

Outten took his final visit to Blacksburg two weekends ago and was sold by offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen, wide receivers coach Fontel Mines, and Pry. In fact, that visit likely sealed his decision, and what he told 247Sports should fire up Hokies' fans as to where the program is headed.

Matthew Outten thinks "Virginia Tech is going big places"

Outten's visit sealed his fate and one of the reasons why he chose Blacksburg is because of what Pry and his staff have been building and where they could potentially go in a short time.

"I definitely see Virginia Tech going big places. They had a pretty good season last year. I can see me making a big impact in making them go even farther."

Just two-plus years into the Brent Pry era and the recruits are already seeing what is being built by the coaching staff. The message was sent loud and clear with all the retainment Virginia Tech got following a regular season win over Virginia that made the Hokies bowl-eligible and a Military Bowl win over Tulane. Now it's being received by the recruits, mainly from the state of Virginia and even South Carolina where they got a commitment from signal caller AJ Brand who picked Tech over the Gamecocks.

The Hokies are appeared to be heading to big places and now the recruits are catching on and this should get Virginia Tech fans even more excited for not only this year, but beyond.
