Josh Pate has an eye-opening take on Virginia Tech entering 2024

Entering Year 3 in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry has his team in a spot not many people saw coming just a couple of seasons ago when he was hired to replace Justin Fuente. In his short time in charge of the Hokies, the former Penn State defensive coordinator has his team as a dark horse in the ACC this season.

There are a number of reasons for the hype around Virginia Tech this season, but some of the national media and analysts are noticing that the Hokies are speeding up the rebuild under Pry and his staff. CBS Sports analyst Josh Pate named three schools this season that are "Sleeping Giants" that could be woken up in 2024. He named Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, and Nebraska.

Here is what Pate said about the Hokies entering 2024.

"Virginia Tech used to be a National Championship contender. What if they wake up? They've got a shot this year. They've got shot, they got a workable schedule. They got a team with a totally in touch with it's indenity. They could have a high-level run game with Kyron Drones at quarterback contributing with that. There's a game in early November where if they navigate the early portion of their schedule, even if they have just one loss, they can afford to drop one, but if they're a one-loss or better team in early November, that's when Clemson comes to town. If we have one-loss or better Virginia Tech team that day or night, you will see Lane Stadium like come of us remember it being maybe a generation ago."

This is not the first time that Pate has spoken highly of Virginia Tech ahead of this season, but he's spot on. If the Hokies are a one-loss or less team when Clemson visits, it will be a game with a lot riding on it for multiple reasons. Then think of the atmosphere that would be awaiting the Tigers. There are some potential roadblocks ahead of that game on the schedule, but Virginia Tech is certainly a sleeping giant waiting to be woken up as soon as 2024.
