Instant reaction from Virginia Tech's dominating second-half over Marshall
By Scott Roche
Through 30 minutes of Virginia Tech's home opener against Marshall Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium, Hokies fans must have thought that they were living in another nightmare.
For the second consecutive week, Virginia Tech's offense was not good from play-calling to execution to the offensive line. Things were so bad for a second consecutive week that fans let out their frustration on X. However, for a second week in a row, the Hokies offense played a good final 30 minutes that led to a much-needed win over the Thundering Hurd in Blacksburg.
Instant reaction from Virginia Tech beating Marshall
In some ways, it was actually rather stunning that the Hokies went into the locker room with a 10-7 lead at halftime. The only touchdown came from a Jaylin Lane punt return for a touchdown and the other points came from a field goal where Virginia Tech started the drive in Marshall territory. Of course, not able to get out of their own way, Tech allowed a blocked punt that led to a second-quarter touchdown.
As bad as the Hokies offense was in the first half, their defense was outstanding, limiting the Thundering Hurd to 1of-9 on third downs (same as their offense). Add in a touchdown from Lane on the punt return, it was a recipe for a halftime lead.
Now the question must be asked, why does the offense open up and click in the second half for two straight weeks, but the first half is a hot mess? Virginia Tech scored three touchdowns in the final half, runs by Bhayshul Tuten and Kyron Drones, and a Da'Quan Felton touchdown reception. Stephen Gosnell made a big diving catch down the field to help a drive and they ran the ball effectively.
This offense is too good to be as bad as they have been for two straight weeks and more things need to get ironed out before going to Old Dominion next Saturday. For one day, the first win is in the book and now it's about another week of adjustments.
