Current & former Virginia Tech quarterbacks forming special bond
By Scott Roche
Going into the 2024 season, Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones didn't sugarcoat things at ACC Media Day last week. The Baylor transfer wants to be playing football on the first Saturday in December in Charlotte in the ACC Championship Game as does his third-year head coach Brent Pry.
Why can't the Hokies be a team that is that game? They return most of their production from last season on both sides of the ball. Drones stepped into the starting lineup in Week 3 at Rutgers last season and after getting his feet wet and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen finding the right package for him, the Hokies really took off in the ACC to the tune of a 5-3 record that allowed them to become bowl-eligible with a 55-17 rout of Virginia two days after Thanksgiving.
Going into this season, Drones is the focal point of the Hokies offense and he's looking to impress NFL scouts ahead of the 2025 Draft in Green Bay. He is preparing for the upcoming season and getting advice from two former Virginia Tech QB legends.
Kyron Drones having conversations with Michael Vick and Tyrod Taylor
If any players know what it takes to be the quarterback at Virginia Tech and have a ton of success at not only the collegiate level but also in the NFL, it's Michael Vick and Tyrod Taylor. Drones has been having conversations with both Hokie legends ahead of the 2024 season and using them as a resource for help both on and off the field.
"I’ve been talking to Mike Vick and then Tyrod Taylor a little bit here and there. Me and Tyrod are supposed to get back on the phone and I just want to pick his brain with how he dealt with everything at Virginia Tech and how he deals with everything at the NFL. Just see what tools he can help me with coming into the season."

If two former quarterbacks played at Virginia Tech and know how to handle the expectations ahead of a season with a lot of hype and expectations, it's Vick and Taylor. They have seen it all at both levels and have a wealth of knowledge. It's not surprising to see both players reaching out to Drones and giving him the support ahead of a huge season not only for himself but his Hokies' teammates.
