For the second consecutive year, the Virginia Tech football team will play their four non-conference games in the first four weeks. Three of the four opponents will be the same as last season with the season-opener at Vanderbilt being the only different team they face, replacing Purdue in Week 2 in 2023.

The Hokies will host Marshall and travel to Old Dominion after playing Vanderbilt in Nashville Labor Day Weekend, but their final non-conference game before ACC play begins is at home against a very good Rutgers team and one ESPN analyst thinks that is a game that not many people should sleep on and might not be talking about.

Greg McElroy thinks Rutgers at Virginia Tech is a "sneaky-good" game in Week 4

On his Always College Football podcast, Greg McElroy of ESPN said that Rutgers at Virginia Tech is a "sneaky-good" game that people overlook early in the season.

"Be careful there. That's one of the sneaky-good non-conference game that no one is talking about. But be careful with that matchup"

People nationally might not be talking about it, but I can bet you that Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry and his staff will not let his team overlook that game. Last season in New Jersey, the Scarlet Knights beat the Hokies, 35-16, with a running game that was tough to stop.

Running back Kyle Monangai ran wild on the Hokies for three touchdowns and Rutgers returns many players on the defensive side of the ball. I can guarantee you that not many people outside of Blacksburg and Hokies fans are not overlooking this game.

This is a key non-conference game for both teams and Rutgers will be coming into the game off a bye, while it will be the final tune-up for Virginia Tech before ACC play begins six nights later in South Florida against Miami.
