Through the first four weeks of the college football season, the Virginia Tech football team will be working out the kinks in their four non-conference games against Vanderbilt, Marshall, Old Dominion, and Rutgers. Coming out of that 4-0 would be vital if the Hokies want to be a contender for the first 12-team College Football Playoff.

Once ACC play begins, the Hokies will face their toughest road challenge in the first month of the season when they travel to South Florida to play the University of Miami on a Friday night. This game is huge for both teams as Miami is seen as a real ACC contender, while the Hokies are seen as a dark. horse in the ACC race.

College football analyst Josh Pate of 247Sports thinks that this game in late September could be one of the better college football games of the season and mentioned it when he was discussing potential Games of the Year in College Football in 2024.

Josh Pate lists Virginia Tech at Miami as a potential "Game of the Year Contender in 2024"

Pate thinks this game could be a big one for both schools, but he thinks a Hokies' victory could set them up very well for a home game on Nov. 9 against Clemson.

"With Miami, if you look on their schedule after the Florida game (Aug. 31), you say 'Wait a second. Virginia Tech, wasn't that the sleeper team everyone was talking about. Yeah, they got Drones the quarterback up there, really good running game, defense is pretty good. Yeah, they play at Miami and it's a Friday night?' If Virginia Tech wins, there is a wide-open path to them to be undefeated in conference play or maybe just undefeated when Clemson comes to town later in the year. We can dream."

There is no doubt that this will be a huge ACC opener for Virginia Tech. To be honest, if the Hokies were not 4-0 going down to Miami, it would be disappointing. If they can win that game, they still have some tough tests against Georgia Tech at home and on the road at Syracuse, just to name two, before Clemson comes to Blacksburg, but there is no debating that this game between Virginia Tech and Miami will have a giant effect on how the rest of the season plays out for both teams with two months remaining in the season.
