By Scott Roche
Things are going to look different in the ACC next athletic season. The conference is expanding with the additions of Stanford, California, and SMU. Thursday, the conference announced the 2024-25 men’s and women’s basketball opponents and there are a lot of one-time opponents on everyone’s schedule. Also being released with the opponents was the conference opponent's format in terms of scheduling.
Here is the breakdown for the Virginia Tech men who will play three opponents every year home and away, then everyone else either home or away to fill out the 20-game schedule.
The three teams the Hokies will play home and away next season and beyond are Clemson, Miami, and Virginia. It's not surprising that the Cavaliers are there and Miami is a yearly common opponent for Brent Pry and the Virginia Tech football team beginning next fall.
Here are the teams that will be coming to Blacksburg next winter, Louisville, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, SMU, Syracuse, and Wake Forest. The Hokies will travel to Boston College, California, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and Stanford. You can plan on the two California teams being the same trip and likely just 48 hours apart.
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips released the following statement about the basketball schedules for next season and beyond.
"“As the 2023-24 ACC women’s and men’s basketball regular-season competition continues and our teams look ahead to the postseason, we are thrilled to announce each school’s opponents for our first year as an 18-member league. We look forward to having Cal, SMU and Stanford join the ACC this summer and we know there’s already great excitement and anticipation for our teams, alumni and fans for what’s ahead surrounding this incredible conference.” "
First things first, there is still games for the Hokies in this season, but they know who they will be playing and where next season, with the dates to be announced at a later date.
