3 most overrated ACC teams entering 2024 season
By Scott Roche
Florida State, Georgia Tech, and SMU are three ACC schools part of this weekend's Week 0 kick-off to the 2024 college football season. As for the rest of the conference schools, they have to wait until next week to begin the season and a lot of them are beginning the season with high hopes.
While some of the teams can live up to the expectations, some might struggle to. Earlier this week we looked at three underrated teams in the ACC entering 2024 and now it's time to look at three teams that are overrated as we inch closer to the season.
Clemson
Every season Dabo Swinney has the Tigers as an ACC contender, but it's not too often that Clemson is coming into a season following a 4-4 campaign in the conference the year before. They did not add anyone through the transfer portal and they lost some key players to the NFL and have a tough schedule in 2024.
They open with Georgia next weekend in Atlanta, have a trip to FSU, and have a trip to Blacksburg to play Virginia Tech. They also have North Carolina State and Louisville and arguably have one of the tougher ACC schedules. Seeing them finish the season with at least three or four losses is not out of the question.
SMU
This is the first season in the ACC for the Mustangs coming from the AAC where they knocked off Tulane and really rolled over the competition in the league. Now the question is, can they continue to do that against Power 4 schools on a weekly basis? That's the question facing them entering the season.
Preston Stone is one of the better quarterbacks in the conference and he has a number of skilled players who can cause problems for opposing defenses. Their schedule is not too difficult in the ACC with a home game against Florida State and a road game at Louisville on back-to-back weeks, but can they beat the teams they're supposed to beat? They enter the season after dropping the Fenway Bowl to Boston College.
Louisville
Jeff Brohm took Louisville to the ACC Championship Game in his first season, but they came up short against an undermanned Florida State team. After coming up short, the former Purdue coach hit the transfer portal and did it hard to build a deep roster and one of the more talented ones. While it would be easy to see them have another strong season under Brohm, can they navigate a tough schedule? That's the question and three losses in the ACC is not out of the question.
It's going to be an interesting season in the ACC with several teams that could come out on top, but some teams could disappoint. All three of these teams are capable of contending, but they are also question marks entering the season.
