3 Most Underrated ACC Teams Entering 2024 Season
By Scott Roche
Week 0 for the 2024 college football season is here. This Saturday, three ACC teams, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and SMU will begin their season with the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets playing in Ireland, while the Mustangs will open with a non-conference game at Nevada.
It is going to be an interesting season in the new-look ACC with Stanford and California joining SMU as first-year members. There are a number of teams that are overrated going into the season as well as some teams that are being underrated across the country. Here are three underrated teams going into this season in the ACC.
Georgia Tech
A lot of the talk has been just how tough the Yellow Jackets schedule is this season, but if Georgia Tech is able to put it all together behind quarterback Haynes King, then they could be a sleeper in the ACC this season. They have a chance to state their case this Saturday against No. 10 Florida State in Ireland.
The offense is explosive and will be able to put up points, but the biggest question is whether or not the defense can get enough stops as they struggled to do so last season. If they do, this is a team that can win more than six games and it wouldn't be surprising to see them get to eight. It's a long shot, but doable if things fall into place.
Syracuse
The Orange is on the opposite end of the Yellow Jackets when it comes to the schedule for the season. They have a very good schedule and it wouldn't be surprising to see them get anywhere from six to nine wins. Yes, nine wins are possible for Syracuse in 2024.
Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord is poised for a huge season and first-year head coach Fran Brown has brought new energy to a program that was badly in need of it. They open with four straight home games and don't have to play FSU, Louisville, or North Carolina. If they take care of business against the teams they are supposed to, eight to nine wins are possible.
Virginia Tech
Like Syracuse, the Hokies are facing a doable schedule entering the season with no Louisville, North Carolina State, or Florida State, the three teams to beat them last season. They do have Miami and Clemson on the docket, but they have the Tigers at home and the Hurricanes on the road. Other than those two games, they should be favored in their other 10 games.
Quarterback Kyron Drones returns with nearly all of his production around him from last season with running back Bhayshul Tuten and four wide receivers. At the same time, the defense also had a lot of retainment and added some key depth pieces through the transfer portal. If Virginia Tech wins the games they're supposed to, 10 wins is within reach.
The 2024 season is here and the craziness begins this weekend before a very busy Labor Day Weekend begins in 11 days with a full slate of games. We made it.
