The Virginia Tech football defense this season has an opportunity to be one of the better ones in the ACC. They are returning several players from a team that got after the QB a lot in 2023, while also adding some key transfer portal defensive linemen and a linebacker that is going to cause problems for opposing defenses.

After opening the season with their four non-conference games against Vanderbilt, Marshall, Old Dominion, and Rutgers, the Hokies will begin their eight-game ACC slate at Miami before a cross-country flight to play first-year member Stanford. Once they kick off conference play, they will play playing talented signal callers, and here are the three top quarterbacks Virginia Tech and defensive coordinator Chris Marve will see this upcoming fall.

. . 436. . 3. Haynes King. player. ACC. . Haynes King

Like Virginia Tech, there is a lot of hype beginning to build around a Georgia Tech team that returns a lot of talent and should be better this fall than they were when they went 6-6 in the regular season before a 30-17 Gasparilla Bowl win over Central Florida. King broke out last season for the Yellow Jackets and should pick up where he left off.

In 2023, he threw for just under 3,000 yards, and 27 touchdowns, while rushing for 737 yards and 10 more touchdowns. His 61.6% completion rate was good, but if the Yellow Jackets are going to compete in 2024 with a very difficult schedule, they will need him to cut down on the 16 interceptions he threw. Georgia Tech will visit Blacksburg in late October for what could be a very entertaining game.

ACC. . 432. . . . 2. Cade Klubnik. Cade Klubnik. player

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney will bring his Tigers to Lane Stadium in early November and he will be bringing in seasoned quarterback Cade Klubnik who had a good 2023 season. He threw for 2,844 yards and 19 touchdowns while completing 63.9% of his passes. A pocket passer, Klubnik did rush for four touchdowns on a team that finished tied for sixth place in the ACC at 4-4 with North Carolina and Duke. Expect Swinney to have the Tigers turn things around in 2024 with an offensive unit that returns a good amount of talent. Nov. 9 at Lane Stadium when Clemson visits will be the Hokies biggest home game on the schedule.

Cam Ward. 1. . . Cam Ward. 834. ACC. . . player

Cam Ward had a decision to make once he entered the transfer portal, declare for the NFL Draft to transfer for another year of college football. He chose that latter and ended up in South Florida with Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes. Time will tell, but is Ward what Miami has been missing recently to get them over the hump in the ACC and into the expanded 12-team playoff?

Last season for Washington State, he threw for 3,735 yards and 25 touchdowns while completing 66.6% of his passes while throwing just seven interceptions. He also scrambled for eight rushing touchdowns. This is a big year for Cristobal and the Hurricanes and Ward is by far the biggest transfer portal addition at quarterback in the conference. Virginia Tech kicks off ACC play on Sept. 27 at Miami with Kyron Drones playing his good friend who he has spent some time working out with this off-season.
