Virginia Tech finished up its first spring practices under first-year coach James Franklin with the annual spring game on Saturday afternoon. Around 40,000 fans filed into Lane Stadium to watch the first game under the former Penn State coach.

While the fans enjoyed the first action of the 2026 Hokies, albeit a spring game, there were also several recruits on campus in the next couple of recruiting classes. One of the recruits was four-star quarterback Peter Bourque from Massachusetts. He de-committed from the University of Michigan in December after the school parted ways with Sherrone Moore.

Since he reopened his recruiting, some top programs are after him, and one of those schools is Virginia Tech. Another one is Penn State and new coach Matt Campbell. Bourque is keeping his recruiting as quiet as possible as schools battle for him, but one decision coming up on Wednesday might be an underrated one that could affect Bourque's decision.

Virginia Tech in the mix for Class of 2027 QB Peter Bourque

Aside from Virginia Tech and Penn State, other schools in the mix for Bourque are Notre Dame and Georgia. According to 247Sports, he is the No. 7-ranked quarterback in his class and the 80th-overall ranked player.

While Penn State is seen as a real threat to land Bourque, Wednesday's decision from five-star quarterback in the Class of 2027, Will Mencl, could have an effect on where Bourque goes. Mencl is making his decision between Penn State, Auburn, and Oregon. If he chooses Penn State, then that could sway Bourque's decision.

Franklin and Danny O'Brien have made it clear that Bourque, who plays at Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., that he's a priority. Penn State also offered another QB out of Massachusetts, Will Wood, who plays at Xaverian Brothers High School. There is no doubt that Bourque's recruitment is a top priority for Franklin and O'Brien.
