On Wednesday, the spring transfer portal will open for football. After Saturday’s glorified scrimmage that saw the offense go against the defense, the defenders ran away with a 50-21 win that used a scoring system that catered to the defense, and they took full advantage.
The offense was missing both of Virginia Tech’s top quarterbacks, Kyron Drones and Pop Watson. Drones was shut down seven days earlier to undergo a medical procedure that, according to head coach Brent Pry, was done last Wednesday. Expecting to see Watson take a lot of snaps, he too missed the game with a tissue issue, and Pry thought it was best not to play him. That left the signal calling duties to Davi Belfort, A.J. Brand, and Kelden Ryan.
During the scrimmage, the defensive line seemed to have its way, causing problems for the Hokies QBs, and the offensive line was a concern before the game. Let’s be honest, it’s been an issue for some time now, long before new offensive line coach Matt Moore joined over the winter. It’s an issue that Pry needs to address in the spring portal.
Virginia Tech should look at adding more offensive linemen through the spring transfer portal
Following the game on Saturday, Pry said that the offensive line and secondary were the two positions that improved during the spring. While that is all well and good, it’s not ready to begin the season by any means. West Virginia transfer Kyle Altuner is going to be a good player, and Montavious Cunningham should be a big factor in the fall, but three false start penalties on Saturday in an empty stadium is a cause for concern.
Last season, in the spring portal window, quarterback Collin Schlee was added from UCLA, and Miami linebacker Kaleb Spencer also committed to the Hokies. This spring, you can make the case that all positions are in play, but offensive linemen are a spot that they should target beginning Wednesday.
