Things are heating up and heating up quickly on the recruiting trail with the Class of 2027. First-year Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin had a lot of success in recruiting while he was at Penn State, regardless of what the Nittany Lions fans want to say or the narrative they take.
Anyway, since he's been in Blacksburg for six months, recruiting has been taken to a different level than it has been recently. Virginia Tech is on the recruits that they normally wouldn't have been in on under the previous two staffs. Whether it's the Class of 2026 or Class of 2027, recruiting is taking a major turn for the Hokies.
Late on Thursday night, while a lot of fans might have been sleeping or watching the softball team put the finishing touches on an ACC Tournament win over Virginia, 3-1, to advance to the semifinals, Franklin struck it big in recruiting.
Virginia Tech commit sends message about James Franklin in Blacksburg
Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from four-star cornerback Chase Johnson from Georgia. The 10th commit to the Hokies Class of 2027 didn't beat around the bush about Frankin and what could be happening soon in Blacksburg.
"I feel like he's going to change things around here,'' said Johnson.
That seems to be a common phrase since he was hired back in November. When Franklin was fired at Penn State, the Virginia Tech search committee had to do everything possible to get him to accept the job. They did, and he did. Now, not only are the results on the field going to be different and change, but so is the recruiting.
Some people call it the 'James Franklin effect' or whatever, but rest assured, he is just beginning to cook at Virginia Tech. For the record, Franklin got a commitment from a player from the state of Georgia over Florida State, Louisville, Georgia, and other SEC schools. The James Franklin effect. If Franklin doesn't turn things around in Blacksburg, it'll be surprising.
