Recruiting has been cooking for new Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin in recent weeks. The former Penn State head coach began with getting a handful of commits along the defensive line. Not to be outdone on the offensive side of the ball, the Hokies have been getting a slew of commitments.

It's not just commitments, but it's skilled position commitments for new offensive coordinator Ty Howle. Two running backs, two wide receivers, and a tight end all committed to Franklin. Quarterback Peter Bourque will make his commitment next week.

Franklin has been slowly building the Class of 2027, and late Thursday night, he added a huge piece with a four-star cornerback from Georgia.

Virginia Tech picks up commitment from 4-star cornerback from Georgia

Hayes Fawcett of Rivals reported that four-star cornerback Chase Johnson committed to the Hokies, giving them a huge building block for the future and defensive coordinator Brent Pry. Sure, getting commitment from a four-star cornerback is nice, but considering who the Hokies beat out, well, that's another story.

Remember, recruiting in Blacksburg has not been very good in recent years, but under Franklin, it's going to go to another level. Virginia Tech beat out Florida State, Louisville, and Georgia for Johnson. Again, it can't be stated enough, the James Franklin effect. The new boss has up to 10 commitments in the class now. Johnson is the 34th-ranked cornerback in the country according to 247Sports.

Johnson, who holds nearly 30 scholarship offers, visited Blacksburg last month. Look, times are changing at Virginia Tech in terms of recruiting. How many times have the Hokies beat out 30 programs for a recruit? How many times have the Hokies gone into Georgia and plucked a recruit as highly-rated as Johnson? Not many, but it is the latest addition to a class that is quietly becoming a good one for Franklin.
