As Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young has been adding players through the Transfer Portal this cycle, he has been adding forwards and guards. Given what the Hokies lost through the portal from the 2025-26 team, all of those were positions of need.

However, with the portal cycle closed and players committing each day, there was one major need that the veteran coach still has with the portal, and a big one. Virginia Tech lost promising freshman Christian Gurdak in the portal to Rutgers, of all schools, and Antonio Dorn to Wake Forest. That left an already thin position even thinner this spring.

Sure, the Hokies could try to survive as a small team with a small lineup, which they have had to do at times, but that is less than ideal in the ACC. With the NCAA Tournament expanding to 76 teams next season, that opens the door for the Hokies to get in if they pick up needed pieces in the portal to round out their roster. On Friday morning, they have reportedly done that.

Virginia Tech adds ACC transfer to bolster center position for next season

According to Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of 247Sports and CBS Sports, the Hokies and Young have signed North Carolina State freshman big man Musa Sagnia from Bakau, Gambia. The 6-foot-10, 235-pounder was one of the top remaining big men in the portal, according to Zenitz.

In 34 games for the Wolfpack last season, he averaged 2.3 points and 2.8 rebounds a game in 12.4 minutes a night. He scored a season-high 10 points and grabbed four rebounds against Syracuse this past season and seven points against Florida State.

Sagnia got some key minutes under former NC State coach Will Wade, but when he left for LSU, a lot of Wolfpack players hit the portal. Sagnia has potential and gives Virginia Tech a presence in the middle with experience, which is more than what they had coming off the bench in 2025-26.
