Over the summer, Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young and his staff put on the full-court press in recruiting Class of 2027 four-star Tyran Frazier. He was offered by the Hokies in July and took an official visit Labor Day Weekend in Blacksburg.
Frazier, the 59th-ranked player in his class according to 247Sports, quickly became a priority for Young and Virginia Tech in the Class of 2027, and on Wednesday, they landed a commitment from the 6-foot-9 St. Louis, Missouri native.
Virginia Tech men's basketball picks up commitment from 4-star Class of 2027 center Tyran Frazier
Frazier is a Top 60 prospect by most major outlets, and now he's committed to Virginia Tech, which is the first recruit in the Class of 2027 that the Hokies have got a commitment from. Last week, Abdul-Malik Olajuwon, son of former NBA star Akeem, committed to SMU over Virginia Tech and others. However, while it would have been a nice addition, landing Frazier is a big pickup for a program looking to compete with the top programs in the ACC and across the country for the top recruits.
According to Adam Finkelstein of 247Sports, Frazier has a 7-foot-1 wingspan and plays around the rim at both ends of the floor. In fact, Finkelstein believes that he could remind Virginia Tech fans of Tobi Lawal during his time in Blacksburg. That's a promising comp.

Frazier picked the Hokies over Missouri and Marquette, according to Sam Kayser. This is a big addition for Young and his staff as they continue to build things in Blacksburg during some times that are changing under new athletic director Brian White and his staff.
Some analysts see Frazier as someone who will require patience when he gets on campus in terms of being developed by Young and his staff. However, times are changing in college basketball as well as at Virginia Tech, but this is a good start for Young and the Class of 2027. Beating out an SEC and a Big East school is a rather big feat for the Hokies.
