Going into the 2024 season, there was a lot of hype for the Virginia Tech football team. Maybe there was too much hype, and after stumbling their way to a 6-7 season. It didn't take long for the wheels to come off the bus last season.
A disappointing and frustrating overtime loss at Vanderbilt on Labor Day Weekend set the tone for a season that was hampered by injuries, one-score losses, and questionable coaching decisions. It all spiraled out of control quickly and they were never really able to right the ship and gain momentum.
There were a number of reasons and theories as to what went wrong, but things never really looked right from the get-go for a team that was loaded with NFL talent from both retention from the 2023 season and additions from the Transfer Portal. Heck, they were a trendy pick from a lot of the national media to crash the 12-team College Football Playoff. It never got close, and quarterback Kyron Drones hinted at what may have brought down last season in Blacksburg on the gridiron.
Kyron Drones hints at what sunk Virginia Tech football in 2024
Drones was a guest on the "Next Up with Adam Breneman" podcast and touched on several topics, including goals for Virginia Tech in 2025. Drones admitted that he would like one thing done differently this fall as compared to last season.
"ACC Championship (as a goal), but the main goal is just to be where our feet are,'' said Drones. "Don't go thinking about the first game right now. We are still in camp, so just go out there and be 1-0 each day in camp, and then when we get to the first game, go 1-0 and then go 1-0 each and every week. Be where our feet are and don't take anybody for granted. I feel like that's what happened last year. We had all this hype going into last year about we could be this team, and we just took a lot of things for granted, and just being where our feet were would have eliminated a lot of the failures we had.''
If we're being honest, this shouldn't come as a surprise to many Virginia Tech fans. It makes sense that last year's team was reading their preseason clippings, and then when things went south, they were not able to right the ship. It all doesn't have to do with the players, but they had their share of the blame. Drones looks and sounds like a different type of player this year, and count me in as someone who thinks he's ready for a huge bounce-back season now that he's healthy. You can bet he'll make sure his teammates have their feet on the ground correctly every week.
