Since he was hired at Virginia Tech, James Franklin has been hitting the ground running. He had a ton of success in recruiting while he was at Penn State. That is beginning to show up in Blacksburg.

Before Franklin was hired, the recruiting was not what it needed to be under Justin Fuente and Brent Pry. At least Pry tried and mended relationships with in-state contacts, unlike Fuente, who burned them. Expect Franklin, who used to come into Virginia and grab the top recruits and bring them to State College.

Recruiting in the Class of 2027 is off to a good start, and on Tuesday, it got even better for Franklin and Virginia Tech after he snuck in and plucked a recruit over Mario Cristobal and Miami.

Virginia Tech lands Class of 2027 recruit over Miami, Duke and Louisville

Early on with the Class of 2027, Franklin and new defensive line coach Sean Spencer are building the class in the trenches. That trend continued when three-star edge Xavier Perkins committed to the Hokies. A Durham, North Carolina native, he is the 11th-ranked player in the state of North Carolina, according to 247Sports.

Aside from Miami, Louisville and Duke were also in the mix for Perkins, who is scheduled to take a visit in early June, but has shut down his visits anywhere else. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Perkins was on campus recently, and the visit was enough for him to commit to the Hokies.

So far, in the rising senior class, Franklin has commits on the defensive side of the ball from Perkins, Andrew Rogers, an edge, Alexander Taylor, another edge, and Brock Frisby. There are still several recruits that are scheduled to visit over the next couple and this weekend, there will be a lot of recurits on camps for the annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon.
