It has been quite the recruiting heater for James Franklin at Virginia Tech over the last couple of months. He has landed commitments on both sides of the ball, but one area that is quietly growing and getting deeper is on the defensive side.
While Franklin went on a heater on the offensive side, the commitments have been coming in recently on the defensive side. Last Sunday, he picked three commitments from four-star recruits, on defense and two on the offensive side of the ball.
On the defensive side, the Hokies secured a commitment from cornerback Bryce Woods from Georgia, which bolstered a group that includes cornerback Chase Johnson, cornerback Austin Barrett, and safety Elijah Butler. On Friday, the Hokies picked up another commitment at defensive back for defensive coordinator Brent Pry.
Virginia Tech picks up commitment from three-star defensive back Turmarian Moreland
Friday, Franklin added to his depth when three-star defensive back Turmarian Moreland, from West Palm Beach, Florida, committed to the Hokies. Moreland picked Virginia Tech over Auburn, Georgia, and Louisville.
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound is the 31st-ranked athlete nationally according to 247Sports and the 42nd-ranked prospect in Florida. According to Zach Blostein of VTScoop, Moreland said that the Hokies coaching staff is looking for him to play the 'star' position, a hybrid role of linebacker and defensive back responsibilities.
Moreland is the 24th commit to the Class of 2027 for Virginia Tech, which moved up to No. 9 in 247Sports rankings. Now, that is going to change over time, and where the Hokies end up remains to be seen. There are some big recruiting visits lined up over the next couple of weeks, and more commitments are likely on the way for Franklin and Virginia Tech.
One position of need for the Hokies remaining in the Class of 2027 is at linebacker, and there are some announcements on the horizon for some recruits, and expect some commitments there sooner rather than later.
