James Franklin pushes Virginia Tech into the same conversation with elite ACC programs in one area

When it comes to James Franklin and Virginia Tech, there are several reasons if you're a Hokies fan, to be excited. Sure, the results on the field would be at the top of the list, but as soon as Franklin accepted the job, you knew that recruiting was going to come into play sooner rather than later.

It didn't take long for fans to realize just how well Franklin recruits when he flipped several Penn State commits to Virginia Tech by signing day last December. Now, looking ahead to the rising senior class of 2027, Franklin continues to take Virginia Tech to places that fans need to get used to.

Virginia Tech joins ACC powers at the top of the list in football recruiting

When it comes to recruiting in the Class of 2027, according to 247Sports, Miami, to nobody's surprise, is leading the ACC with seven top-20 recruits. They have the top 5 according to the outlet. However, it might be somewhat surprising who is tied for second. Virginia Tech and Clemson are the next two with the highest top 20 recruits, with three each.

As far as the Hokies go, they have quarterback Peter Bourque ranked ninth on the list, tight end Jordan Karhoff ranked No. 11, and offensive lineman Dylan Latell ranked No. 17. All three are top-150 recruits according to 247Sports.

Franklin cooked when he was at Penn State recruiting, and he should do the same at Virginia Tech. The new commitment the school is making to athletics is only going to help in efforts to turn things around quickly. However, there are two recruits that the Hokies have got that maybe under Brent Pry or another staff, they wouldn't have.

Bourque is coming to Blacksburg as one of the top-rated signal callers in a long time. He de-committed from Michigan when Sherrone Moore was let go back in December. Franklin and quarterbacks coach Danny O'Brien were involved in his recruitment the first time and quickly got involved the second time. Their patience paid off in the spring when Bourque picked the Hokies over Georgia and Penn State. Again, a four-star QB picked Virginia Tech over Georgia and Penn State. What a time to be a Hokies fan.

As for Karhoff, the tight end position is going to be used differently under Franklin and offensive coordinator Ty Howle. Franklin was able to go into the state of Ohio and pick up Karhoff. That doesn't happen very often right out from under Ryan Day. Franklin and a few other coaches are the only ones who could pull that off.

This is just the beginning for Franklin when it comes to recruiting at Virginia Tech, and soon fans will realize that recruiting is going to be different moving forward. Franklin isn't going to get them all, but he'll be in the mix and get more than Hokies fans are used to year after year.
