Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin is two days away from putting the finishing touches on his first spring game and spring practice session in Blacksburg. It is a big spring game for players as the program looks to take a big step in the former Penn State coach's first season at the helm of the Hokies.

Along with the spring game, there is still a lot going on when it comes to recruiting. This weekend, there will be several Class of 2027 recruits on campus to take in the game and atmosphere. Franklin knows that the recruiting aspect will be just as big as the game.

So far, the Hokies have four commitments along the defensive line in the rising senior class. Currently, Virginia Tech has commitments from Andrew Rogers from Greensboro, North Carolina, Xavier Perkins from Durham, North Carolina, Alexander Taylor from Baltimore, Maryland, and Brock Frisby from Severn, Maryland. That's two North Carolina recruits and two DMV recruits.

On Thursday, Franklin and the Hokies picked up a fifth commitment in the class, and you guessed it, it's on the defensive side of the ball, this time another edge, four-star Joseph Buchanan.

Class of 2027 edge Joseph Buchanan commits to Virginia Tech

Building through the trenches is key in college football. That's what new defensive line coach Sean Spencer and defensive coordinator Brent Pry are doing with Franklin. Buchanan, a 6-foot-3.5, 275-pound edge from Owing Mills, Maryland, was down to Tennessee, North Carolina State, LSU, and Virginia Tech. He has a visit scheduled for Blacksburg at the end of May. He is the top-ranked defensive linemen in Maryland, according to Rivals.

He was recently in Blacksburg and then canceled his visit to NC State early next month shortly after. That clearly put the Hokies in the driver's seat for him. There is still more work that needs to be done in terms of building the class, but Virginia Tech is off to a good start on the defensive side of the ball with commitments.
