One area that the Virginia Tech football coaching staff has had early success in the transfer portal this cycle has been in the secondary. After Clemson's Sherrod Covil, Jr. committed last Wednesday, the Hokies got a pair of commitments on Saturday night for depth.
There is still more work that needs to be done through the portal, but it feels like Pry addressed an area of need with the number of players who have left via either the portal to the NFL Draft. On Saturday, we graded the first four portal commits for Virginia Tech and now let's grade out the two from Saturday night.
East Carolina's Isaiah Brown-Murray was the first to commit on Saturday night. This season for the Pirates, he made 42 tackles, forced a fumble, and had one pick. He registered 63 tackles in three years for ECU and has two years of eligibility remaining.
He goes right to the top of the experience list in the Hokies secondary logging nearly 1,300 snaps. That should not be surprising as losing Mansoor Delane, Dorian Strong, and Mose Phillips is taking away a ton of snaps from Virginia Tech. Brown-Murray is a sneaky-good addition by Pry.
Late on Saturday night, Virginia Tech picked up their third secondary commit when Rice's Tyson Flowers committed. Like Brown-Murray, the 5-foot-11, 211-pounder has two years of eligibility remaining, and the Fort Worth, Texas native is experienced as well.
He was a tackling machine for Rice and a consistent one at that. He had 38 tackles, three for a loss this season for the Owls and 26 of his tackles were solo. He missed only four tackles this season. He also had a forced fumble and two interceptions. He fills a big need for the Hokies along with Covil, Jr. and Brown-Murray.
Of course, we will have to wait and see how these additions workout on the field, but with the amount of talent and experience the Hokies lost this season, they are bringing experienced players and ones that can slot right into the lineup in 2025.
