Three years into Brent Pry’s era at Virginia Tech as the head coach, there is no denying the results. On the field, the Hokies just completed another 6-6 season, their second straight after a 3-8 Year 1. This season feels more like a disappointment with all the love Virginia Tech got before the season started as a dark horse for the 12-team College Football Playoff.
The good news is that the Hokies are going to another bowl this season, and the younger players and coaches need extra practice and one more game. Wednesday was the Early Signing Period for the Class of 2025, a class that Hokies’ fans should be excited about.
Grading Virginia Tech football’s Class of 2025 Signing day
You can say what you want about Pry and the results on the field, but you can’t deny the recruiting success he had for another season with an incoming class. There is much to be excited about on both sides of the ball for the future.
Now first things first, in this day of college sports with the transfer portal and NIL, it doesn’t always mean you’re going to keep them for four years. Players jump from program to program and it’s only going to get more and more with each passing year.
With that said, Pry and his staff, headlined by Fontel Mines, have put together a promising class. They have two quarterbacks, Kelden Ryan and AJ Brand, and they were able to keep both despite attempts by other schools to flip them. Running back Jeff Overton is someone who Pry and Mines think can come in and contribute as early as next season as a freshman, which would be huge.
Micah Matthews and Shamarius Peterkin as wide receivers are talented and on the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Brett Clatterbaugh is a good one. The highlight of signing day was getting a flip from four-star cornerback Jahmari DeLoatch from Cincinnati at the last second.
You can say all you want about Pry and his staff’s troubles during games and he has admitted that, but you cant deny the last two recruiting classes that he has put together. Now it’s time to start showing the results on the field.
