Back in May, four-star quarterback Oscar Rios from Downey, California, set a date to visit Virginia Tech, which was a big development for head coach Brent Pry and his staff. The Hokies already have had a QB commit in the Class of 2026 in Peyton Falzone, but he de-committed in November, only to commit to Penn State, then flip his commitment to Auburn. Maybe the Tigers should let the ink dry when he signs to make sure he heads to them next year.
Rios, the 10th-ranked quarterback prospect and 21st in the state of California in his class, was seen as a huge get as a visitor, but the signal caller canceled his visit to Virginia Tech before he even made the cross-country flight, which was a blow. In the end, he narrowed his choices down to Arizona and UCLA before he picked the Wildcats on Friday night.

Recruiting the Class of 2026 has not been a strong as it was in the Class of 2025 a year ago at this time and there is still time to change that narrative for Pry, but losing out to two of the top quarterbacks with rising seniors is not the best outcome for the Hokeis coach about to enter his fourth-year in Blacksburg.
It's back to the drawing board for Pry and his staff with recruiting during the dead period here. Visits are not allowed to happen now until the fall, and by then, most players in the Class of 2026 will have announced their commitments. There are some priority recruits for the Hokies scheduled to make some decisions over the next week, and hopefully, Virginia Tech lands a commitment or two.
Most of the Hokies' commits in the Class of 2026 are on the defensive side of the ball, and some offensive players would be a nice addition or two.
