Leading into the NFL Draft back in April, former Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones worked out for a handful of teams and even met with a few leading into the draft. It seemed like a long shot that he was going to end up being drafted, but there was a good chance that he would have been picked up on a free-agent contract following the draft.
That was the case, as Drones signed as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers and attended minicamp and training camp last month. However, he was let go after the Packers' first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he has yet to find a new home with the NFL season beginning this week.

Drones was cut on August 15 from their 90-man offseason roster after Green Bay's 28-9 preseason loss to the Steelers. Former Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor remains on the Packers roster for this weekend's season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on the road Sunday afternoon in the late window at 4:25 p.m.
It has been just shy of a month since Drones was cut by the Packers, and he has yet to latch on with a team. This comes after all rosters were cut down to 53 for the season openers, but it isn't surprising that he hasn't found a new team, but that a team hasn't taken a flyer on him for their practice squad.
During the workouts for teams before the draft, Drones didn't sound like someone who was thinking about a position change at the next level, but he hasn't given it more thought; maybe he should. He was a dual-threat at Virginia Tech, as he hurt teams sometimes as much rushing the ball as he did through the air. Maybe making a change to a "Wildcat" quarterback is something that Drones could make a switch to, or some type of short-yardage back?
There are a handful of former Hokies players catching on with practice squads, and as time goes along this season, just maybe he'll get a chance with someone should injuries pile up.
