Leading into the NFL Draft last spring, former Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones worked out for a handful of teams. However, when the dust settled, he did not end up hearing his name called in Pittsburgh and agreed to an undrafted deal with the Green Bay Packers.
That gave Green Bay coach Matt LeFleur two former Hokies quarterbacks on his roster after the Packers also signed veteran backup Tyrod Taylor. However, after just two weeks of training camp and one preseason game, Green Bay has decided to cut ties with one of them, Drones, according to the team's official transactions wire.

Drones got some, but not much, action in Green Bay's preseason 28-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. It was a forgettable night for the former Baylor transfer, who threw one pass that fell incomplete and was sacked three times on just two offensive possessions late in the game.
Releasing Drones leaves Green Bay with three signal callers: starter Jordan Love, followed by Taylor and former Ohio State standout Kyle McCord, who will now likely be the Packers' third-string quarterback when the season begins next month.
Making the Packers' 53-man roster was always seen as a long shot, at best, for Drones, who had his best season in Blacksburg in 2023 when he replaced the injured Grant Wells during a Week 2 loss at home to Purdue. After starting slowly, he finished this first season with the Hokies under former coach Brent Pry with just over 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns, while rushing for 818 yards and five more touchdowns. That season, Virginia Tech was able to rebound from a 1-3 start to become bowl-eligible with a rout of Virginia on Thanksgiving Weekend in Charlottesville.
Now that he's a free agent, it'll be interesting to see if another team brings him into their quarterback room or if a team takes a chance on moving him to another position. It's not that crazy to think.
