In the summer of 2024, former Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry picked up a commitment from four-star Class of 2026 quarterback Peyton Falzone from Nazareth, Pa. He committed in June of 2024 before his junior season.
However, five months later, he de-committed and reopened his recruitment, which was a wild ride in itself. He ended up committing to James Franklin when he was at Penn State in April of 2025, before de-committing and committing to Auburn. I know, you'll be shocked to find out if you don't already know that he de-committed from Auburn and finally committed to Penn State last December before they hired Matt Campbell.
Did you get all that?
He is in his first fall camp with the Nittany Lions, and he is making a position switch for Campbell and Penn State, moving from quarterback to tight end, per Lions247.
Former Virginia Tech QB commit makes switch to tight end at Penn State
Is it rare for a player to make a position change in college? No. Is it rare for a player to move from quarterback to make a position switch? No. Heck, Virginia Tech had that happen in the spring when AJ Brand moved from quarterback to wide receiver.
In the overall big picture, players change positions all the time, but this is a unique situation for Falzone. He committed to Campbell and Penn State, but he likely knew that changing positions was a possibility. Campbell brought some of his Iowa State players to State College, including some of his high school commits, including quarterbacks.
While the move to tight end is being made, that doesn't necessarily mean that Campbell and Penn State would not try some wildcat stuff with Falzone. That has become a thing in football recently, and the same thing could be said about Brand at Virginia Tech.
We'll see how this ends up working out for Falzone, but it also opens his options should he hit the Transfer Portal. Someone who committed and de-committed as many times as he did- you have to think he'll enter the portal at least once, if not twice, during his college career. If tight end doesn't work out, then he'll have portal options at both tight end and quarterback if he chooses.
