When Megan Duffy was hired to replace Kenny Brooks at Virginia Tech as the women's basketball coach, she grabbed an early commitment from a top 100 prospect in the Class of 2025, Katie Sears. She picked the Hokies over two dozen offers and is a recruit that Hokies' fans should be excited about.
Sears was recently named the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year for Watauga High School in Boone, N.C. and she picked up another award after being named the 2024-25 North Carolina MaxPreps High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

Sears, who picked up a four-star ranking from 247Sports last spring, continues to rack up the honors before coming to Blacksburg. It's not surprising to see her collect another honor after her senior season. She averaged 27.2 points, 13 rebounds and 9.3 assists a game.

While she nearly averaged a triple-double a game, she collected 13 triple-doubles this past season in 28 games with two eye-popping games. In a double-overtime loss, 93-91, to South Caldwell in January, Sears had 50 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists. In another game this year, she had 43 points, 21 rebounds, and 15 assists. Those are video game numbers if we're being honest.
The 5-foot-9 guard finished her career with 2,613 points scored and now will set her sights on Blacksburg. She is part of a very good recruiting class that Duffy has put together and now with the WBIT beginning on Thursday night, the former Marquette coach will have to work on putting a roster together while she hopes her team can make a deep run into March.
Regardless of whether Duffy gets a lot of retainment this year with the transfer portal or not, expect Sears to come in and make an impact as a freshman for Virginia Tech.
