Don't look now, but we are just eight Sundays away from the Virginia Tech football team beginning the 2025 season in Atlanta against Shane Beamer and South Carolina. The Gamecocks are getting 2024 Virginia Tech vibes this season in terms of being a dark horse for the new 12-team College Football Playoff. We all know how that ended up for the Hokies last fall.
This is the first of two consecutive SEC opponents to begin the season for Brent Pry and his team in what is a vital season for his tenure in Blacksburg. Vanderbilt will come to Lane Stadium a week later in what will be a revenge game for the Hokies after last season's loss on Labor Day Weekend in Nashville. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let's take a look at the number eight for the Hokies in 2025.
8 weeks until Virginia Tech's season-opener vs. South Carolina
If we're being honest, the No. 8 is a big number for the Hokies this season. Eight wins would be the ceiling for Virginia Tech this season when it comes to their ceiling and floor in terms of record when all is said and done Thanksgiving Weekend in Charlottesville against Virginia. An eight-win season would be seen as a success, again, if we're being honest.
That would fall short of an appearance in the ACC Championship Game, which is more of a dream than reality in 2025, but so is ESPN's FPI's fourth-place finish for the Hokies. Now back to reality, it depends on who you talk to, but at least six wins might be needed for Pry to have his job safe, but eight wins is certainly the ceiling.
Reaching that number would require at least three non-conference wins and then five ACC wins, which might be easier said than done. Who knows, with more questions than answers to begin the season, the Hokies might have a better season than some anticipate. Regardless, we are just eight weeks away from the season beginning.
