Entering Year 4 for Brent Pry at Virginia Tech, after a disappointing 6-6 2024 season, there are a lot of eyes on the Hokies this season and Pry’s future. One year ago today, expectations were high in Blacksburg, but another 6-6 regular season wasn’t what anyone was hoping for or even expecting.
We are in the middle of recruiting season, but it won’t be too long before Virginia Tech and other college programs are getting camp underway for the upcoming season. With a roster that has seen a large amount of turnover and with some new coaches on board, there is no telling what is going to happen when the ball is kicked off on Aug. 31 in Atlanta against South Carolina. With that said, what would you consider the floor and ceiling for the Hokies in 2025?
Virginia Tech football floor/ceiling for 2025
Virginia Tech Floor: 5-7
If we’re being honest, this is what a lot of people would have for an outcome in 2025. The schedule is more difficult, both with the non-conference and ACC schedule, with the backend a brutal stretch. If they don’t have five wins entering November, finding six to become bowl-eligible would be very difficult.
After playing the Gamecocks in the season-opener, the Hokies have a three-game homestand against Vanderbilt, James Madison, and Wofford, where they need to make serious ground. If Kyron Drones stays healthy and Virginia Tech is able to stay healthy across the board, then becoming a bowl team is doable. Without being negative, would anyone be surprised if Virginia Tech won four or five games? Remember, this is the worst-case scenario.
Virginia Tech Ceiling: 8-4
At this time last year, this might have been the floor, but going into this season, it’s the highest point on the ceiling as possible. Not many people are expecting eight wins, and that is a huge stretch with what the Hokies are facing. To get to eight wins, wins over South Carolina and Vanderbilt are a must. If that happens and they sweep their non-conference games, then they’ll be in business.
Last season was a disappointment, but who says that Virginia Tech can’t sneak up on people this season and be a major surprise? It’s doable and a lot would have to go right, but anything is possible. An eight-win season in 2025 would certainly take some heat off of Pry and reignite some hope around the program for the future. When the dust settles on the season, we’ll look back and see if they hit the floor or the ceiling.
