Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young recently went through some staff changes after assistant Kevin Giltner left to return to his alma mater, Wofford, to accept the head coaching job. Young replaced him with Boise State assistant David Moats.

Moats and first-year assistant Chester Frazier are both solid recruiters and key parts to Young's staff now, and one recruit that the Hokies have been in on, four-star guard Trey Beamer, is set to make his commitment this week, with Virginia Tech one of his five finalists.

Virginia Tech men's basketball recruit Trey Beamer to make his commitment on Friday

Beamer, who is rated as a four-star by 247Sports, is down to Mississippi State, South Florida, Maryland, and Boston College, along with the Hokies. According to Sam Kayser of League Ready, Beamer will announce his commitment on Friday and 247Sports has logged a pair of Crystal Ball predictions for Boston College, which is certainly eye-opening.

The 6-foot-1 guard is someone who can create his own shot, score at the basket, make plays off the dribble, and defend at a high level. With the last name Beamer, he is a perfect fit for Virginia Tech and would be a nice addition to Young's system.

Ranked 75th in SportsCenter NEXT Top 100 players in the Class of 2026, Beamer picking BC would be a loss for Young and Virginia Tech. The Eagles have struggled under head coach Earl Grant, who somehow keeps surviving each season, but this would be a huge recruiting win for him over the Hokies and other SEC and Big Ten programs.

Virginia Tech has started practices for the 2025-26 season, which could be a big year in Blacksburg is things go right, but recruiting never stops, and you can bet a lot of eyes will be on Beamer's announcement on Friday.
