After a disappointing 2024-25 season saw them finish 13-19, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the Virginia Tech men's basketball team going into the 2025-26 season. Veteran coach Mike Young may be entering the new season in just under two months, minus one of his top assistant coaches.
Wofford is hiring Virginia Tech assistant Kevin Giltner to replace Dwight Perry, who was let go by Wofford over a week ago amid a school investigation into alleged minor improper benefits to some Terriers' players. Friday afternoon, it was reported by Jeff Goodman with the Field of 68 that the players involved had been reinstated.
Giltner played for the Terriers, and it would be a homecoming that should excite their fanbase.
Wofford hires Virginia Tech assistant coach Kevin Giltner as men's basketball coach
Giltner played from 2008-12 for Wofford, and in 131 games, he averaged 14.8 points per game, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in his senior season for the Terriers. After his playing career ended, he became an assistant coach under Young and was part of three SoCon titles and a berth in the Round of 32 in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
He followed Young to Virginia Tech, and he helped the Hokies capture the ACC Championship in 2022. He has been seen by a lot of people as a future head coach, and getting his first job at Wofford is the perfect beginning as a head coach for Giltner. You would think that at some point, he'll get a crack at leading a power program.
This is a big loss for Young, less than two months before the season starts, and it makes the hiring last spring of Chester Frazier that much more important for Virginia Tech going into the upcoming season.
